The Great American Pie Experiment part four: Everything was going so well. So, so well. Then I had to roll the pastry. I’ve never generally been good at rolling things and I haven’t had much experience with pastry, so it got nasty. I made a rookie error in not letting my dough warm up. The Great American Pie Experiment, part one: I made the dough myself, using this recipe (forget what they say about a dough scraper, you can use a spatula with a sharp end). It was too messy to photograph though. As you can see here, my household is so classy we use wine bottles as rolling pins.

I have a couple of tips of my own to add:

1. If you’re an international student, the ISSO is your friend. Even if you’re not their problem (i.e. in NY on Fulbright), they will help you as much as you can. Your Fulbright officer will not.

2. Again, if you’re an international student, apply for your OPT early. It will seem like it’s less important than all the other crap you have on your plate at the time. It’s not.

3. Take any class you can with Paula Span.

4. If you have a significant other, include them in your J-School life. Otherwise you’ll never see him or her.

5. Most people at journalism school are awesome. Some, however, will not hesitate to kick you in the face to advance themselves. Stick with the first group.

6. Go to everything. EVERYTHING. Because you’ll regret it if you don’t.
